Quick answer

AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your content appear as a direct answer, and GEO (generative engine optimization) helps AI tools such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity cite your website. To appear: answer questions directly at the start of each section, structure content with headings, questions and tables, add schema markup, keep your business information consistent everywhere, write from real experience with numbers and examples, build mentions from trusted sources, and let AI crawlers access your website.

Ask yourself: the last time you needed a quick piece of information, did you search Google and open five links? Or read the answer that appeared at the top of the page? Or ask ChatGPT directly?

Your customers do the same. That means the question is no longer only “am I on the first page?” but “am I the source the answer relies on?” That’s where AEO and GEO come in.

What are AEO and GEO, in plain language?

  • SEO (search engine optimization): getting your page into search results.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): getting your content used as a direct answer: featured snippets in Google, “People also ask”, and voice assistants.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization): getting cited by AI tools such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude when they answer questions in your field.

The three aren’t alternatives to each other but layers on the same foundation. A website that is weak in SEO rarely appears in AI answers.

How do AI tools choose their sources?

The exact details vary from tool to tool and keep changing, but there are clear patterns:

  • They favor content that answers the question directly and clearly.
  • They favor structured content: headings, lists, tables, definitions.
  • They rely on sources that look trustworthy and experienced on the topic.
  • Many of them rely on search results themselves to choose what to read, so good SEO is a prerequisite.
  • They build their picture of businesses from consistent information across several sources: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, and articles that mention you.

9 practical steps to appear in AI answers

1. Answer first, then explain

Start every section with one or two sentences that answer the question directly, then go into detail. For example, under “How much does a website cost in Jordan?” write the number and range first, then the factors. That is exactly what an AI tool does when it summarizes.

You’ll notice that the articles on this blog start with a “Quick answer” box. That’s on purpose.

2. Make headings real questions

Use the same wording your customers use: “How long does it take to build a website?” rather than “Timeline”. Sources for questions: your calls and WhatsApp messages, Google’s “People also ask”, and the questions ChatGPT itself suggests.

3. Structure content so it’s easy to extract

  • Short paragraphs, one idea per paragraph.
  • Numbered lists for steps, bullet lists for features.
  • Tables for comparisons and prices.
  • Clear definitions of terms.

4. Add structured data (schema)

Structured data tells search engines clearly: this is a business called X, offering these services, in this city; these are questions and answers; this is an article written by this person. On our websites we add business (Organization/LocalBusiness), service, FAQPage, Article and Breadcrumb markup.

5. Write from real experience

Generic, repeated content exists by the millions. What sets you apart: numbers from your projects, examples from the local market, mistakes you have seen, and advice only a practitioner knows. Say who wrote the content and what their experience is. Google talks a lot about experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T), and it applies here too.

6. Keep your business information consistent everywhere

Your name, phone, address, services and business description should match on your website, your Google Business Profile, your social accounts and the directories that list you. Contradictions confuse the tools and weaken trust.

7. Build mentions outside your website

AI tools also learn about you from what others say: articles that mention you, interviews, industry directories, customer reviews and links from trusted websites. This is part of building authority in traditional SEO, and it matters even more now.

8. Let AI crawlers in

Some websites unintentionally block crawlers such as GPTBot or PerplexityBot in robots.txt or through firewall settings. If you want to appear, make sure you aren’t blocking them. You can also add an llms.txt file that summarizes your most important pages, and our website is an example.

9. Keep content updated

Prices, technologies and regulations change. Updated content with a clear updated date is preferred over old content.

How to measure your visibility in AI

  • Manual testing: ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google your customers’ questions, and note whether you are mentioned or your website is cited.
  • Google Analytics: watch visits from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com.
  • Search Console: watch impressions and clicks on long queries and questions.

What not to do

  • Don’t fill your pages with machine-generated content without experience or editing; it weakens trust instead of building it.
  • Don’t make claims you can’t back up (“the best in the world”).
  • Don’t hide basic information like prices and the areas you serve if you can share it.

Summary

AEO and GEO aren’t a new trick, but a natural extension of good SEO: useful, structured, honest content from real experience, on a fast website that is technically easy to understand. Build that foundation and you will be well placed however search tools evolve.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO improves your pages' rankings in search results. AEO improves the chance your content appears as a direct answer, such as featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO improves the chance that generative AI tools cite you in their answers. The three work together and rely on the same foundation: useful, structured, trustworthy content.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT?

There is no official way to pay for organic placement in ChatGPT's answers. Appearing depends on your content and business information being available, clear and trustworthy in the sources these tools rely on.

What is an llms.txt file?

A proposed text file placed at the root of a website that summarizes its most important pages for AI tools. It's still an emerging standard and not every tool uses it, but it does no harm and helps organize how your website is understood.

How do I know if AI tools mention my business?

Ask these tools yourself the questions your customers ask (for example: best company that does X in Amman), and note whether they mention you or cite your website. In Google Analytics, watch for visits from sources such as chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.
