Domain and Hosting: Everything a Business Owner Should Know Before Buying

Quick answer

The domain is your website's address (like yourcompany.com) and you renew it yearly; hosting is the server that stores the website and shows it to visitors. Choose a short, easy-to-type domain, preferably .com or .jo depending on your audience, and register it in your own name. Choose hosting by your website's size and traffic (good shared hosting for most businesses, cloud or VPS for bigger stores), with free SSL, backups and fast support.

One of the most painful stories we hear: a business owner calls us because their website suddenly stopped working, and they don’t know where the domain or the hosting is, and the company that built the website five years ago no longer answers. Sometimes we can recover everything, and sometimes the domain is already gone.

This article isn’t technical. It’s what every business owner needs to know about domains and hosting so they really own their website.

The difference, simply

  • Domain: your website’s address on the internet, like webdesignjo.com. It’s like your shop’s street address.
  • Hosting: the server where your website’s files and database live. It’s like the shop itself.
  • DNS: the system that links the address to the shop. When someone types your domain, the browser knows which server to go to.

Choosing a domain name

  • Short and easy to type: imagine saying it over the phone. Will the person type it correctly the first time?
  • No hyphens or numbers if possible: they cause typing and memory mistakes.
  • Brand name first: a domain with your brand name is stronger in the long run than one built from keywords.
  • Register common misspellings if they’re cheap, and redirect them to the main domain.
  • Check its history: if you buy a used domain, make sure it wasn’t used for spammy websites that could hurt its reputation with Google.

Which extension should you choose?

ExtensionWhen it fits
.comThe best known worldwide, suits most businesses, especially if your audience is also outside Jordan.
.jo / .com.joA clear Jordanian identity, suits businesses serving the local market, with specific registration requirements.
.net / .co and othersAlternatives if the .com is taken, but less memorable for most people.

Types of hosting

TypeDescriptionBest for
SharedYour website shares a server with other websitesBrochure websites and small to mid-sized company websites
Cloud / managedMore resources and flexibility, managed by the providerLarger company websites and stores
Virtual private server (VPS)Dedicated resources and full control, but needs technical managementLarge stores and platforms
Dedicated serverA whole server for youVery large projects

What actually matters in hosting?

  • Speed: server response time, and data center location relative to your audience.
  • Stability: uptime and no frequent outages.
  • Backups: automatic, daily and easy to restore.
  • Free SSL: now standard with good providers.
  • Technical support: how fast they respond when something happens.
  • Current versions: supported PHP and database versions.

And remember: the cheapest hosting can be the most expensive decision, because slowness and downtime lose you customers. Read why speed matters.

Business email

An email on your company’s domain raises professionalism and trust. Your options:

  • Hosting email: usually free, fine for simple use.
  • Google Workspace or Microsoft 365: a monthly subscription per user, with higher reliability and collaboration tools.

An important tip: set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC records so your emails don’t land in your customers’ spam folders.

The golden rule: everything in your name

Before signing with any web design company, make sure:

  • The domain is registered in your name or your company’s, with your email.
  • You have login details for the domain registrar account.
  • You have login details for the hosting panel, or at least the hosting is registered in your name.
  • You have full admin access to the website.
  • Auto-renewal is on, and the payment card is up to date.

These items are a core part of a website design contract, and we apply them with all our clients.

Approximate yearly costs

Prices vary by provider and offers, but budget yearly for domain renewal, hosting, business email if paid, and maintenance. We explain the full costs in the website design cost guide.

Have a website but don’t know where its domain is?

This is more common than you’d think. You can find the domain’s registrar using WHOIS tools, then recover access through the registrar. Contact us and we’ll help you sort it out, or we can provide a package with the domain and hosting in your name along with designing your website.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a domain and hosting?

The domain is the address people type to reach your website, and hosting is where the website's files and database live. You need both for the website to work.

Should I choose .com or .jo?

If your audience is only inside Jordan, .jo or .com.jo gives a local identity. If you target a wider audience or want the most familiar option, .com is the best known. You can register both and point one to the other.

In whose name should the domain be registered?

In your name or your company's, with your email, and with login access to the registrar account. This makes sure you are the real owner and don't lose your website if you change companies.

Do I need a business email on my domain?

Yes, an address like info@yourcompany.com looks far more professional than a free email, and can be set up with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or your hosting's email.

What happens if I forget to renew the domain?

The website and email stop working, and after a grace period the domain may become available to others. Turn on auto-renewal and keep the contact details in the registrar account up to date.
