Quick answer

Website design goes through eight stages: (1) discovery and goal setting, (2) page structure and sitemap, (3) content preparation, (4) wireframes, (5) visual design, (6) development, (7) testing and SEO setup, (8) launch, training and follow-up. A mid-sized company website usually takes three to five weeks, and the most common cause of delays is late content and slow review decisions.

Most business owners we work with go through a website project once every few years. So it’s natural not to know what happens between the first call and launch day, when something is needed from you, and why projects sometimes run late.

In this guide we walk you through the eight stages every project goes through with us, and explain at each stage what we do, what we need from you, and roughly how long it takes.

Stage 1: discovery — why are we building this website?

Before any design, we sit with you (in person or online) and ask questions that may seem simple but decide everything:

  • What do you sell, and to whom? Who is your best customer?
  • How do customers find you today?
  • Who are your competitors, and what do you like or dislike about their websites?
  • What should the visitor do: call, send a WhatsApp message, request a quote, buy, book?
  • How will we know the website succeeded after six months?

Your role: be honest and specific. “I want a professional website” isn’t an answer; “I want 20 quote requests a month from companies in Amman” is an excellent one.

Duration: one or two sessions. If you want to come prepared, use the guide on how to write a website brief.

Stage 2: structure — the sitemap

Here we define the pages, their order and how they relate. A good structure helps visitors find what they want fast and helps Google understand your website. At this stage:

  • We map the pages (home, services, work, about, contact, blog…).
  • We research the keywords your customers type, and give every important service its own page.
  • We define the visitor’s path from arrival to contacting you.

Your role: review the map and make sure all your important services are there.

Stage 3: content — what will the website say?

This stage is underestimated by many, and it is the number one cause of project delays. Content includes every page’s text, the photos, service names, FAQs and sometimes prices.

  • If you write the content yourself, we give you a template for each page with the questions it should answer.
  • If we write it, we gather the information from you in an interview, then write and send it for review.
  • Photos: real photos of your work, team and place always beat stock images.

Our detailed advice is in how to write website copy that sells.

Stage 4: wireframes

Before colors and photos, we sketch the structure of the key pages in black and white: where the headline goes, where the buttons are, the order of sections. The goal is to agree on “what is on the page and in what order” before getting busy with “how it looks”.

Why does this step matter? Because moving a section in a wireframe takes minutes, and moving it after design and development takes days.

Stage 5: visual design

Now we apply your brand: colors, fonts, photos, icons and button style. We design the homepage and a sample inner page first, on mobile and desktop, and show them to you.

  • We agree in advance on the number of revision rounds (usually two to three).
  • We collect your feedback in one message per round instead of scattered notes.
  • Once the sample is approved, we apply the same style to the remaining pages.

Your role: quick, clear reviews. “I don’t like it” is hard to work with; “the headline is small on mobile and the button should be WhatsApp, not a form” is excellent.

Stage 6: development

We turn the approved design into a working website: we build the theme, add content, and connect the forms and contact buttons, payments if needed, and other systems. Here we also choose the right technology: WordPress for most websites, or custom development for platforms. Read WordPress or custom development.

During this stage we work on a staging version the public can’t see, and share its link with you so you can follow progress.

Stage 7: testing and SEO setup

Before launch we go through a long checklist, including:

  • Display on different screen sizes and browsers.
  • Loading speed and Core Web Vitals.
  • All forms, buttons and links work and their messages arrive.
  • A title and description for every page, clean URLs, a sitemap and structured data.
  • SSL, backups and security settings.
  • Google Analytics 4 and tracking for calls, WhatsApp and forms.

The technical side is explained in technical SEO during website design.

Stage 8: launch, training and follow-up

We move the website to the official domain, submit the sitemap to Google Search Console, and make sure everything works on the live site. Then:

  • A hands-on training session on the dashboard.
  • Handover of all access (website, hosting, domain, tools).
  • Follow-up in the first weeks: bugs, feedback, and the first numbers on visits and leads.

If you have an old website that ranks on Google, there are special steps to carry its rankings over without losing them: redesigning your website without losing SEO.

Approximate timeline for a mid-sized company website

StageApproximate duration
Discovery and structure3 – 5 days
Content (in parallel)1 – 2 weeks
Wireframes and visual design1 – 1.5 weeks
Development1 – 2 weeks
Testing and launch2 – 4 days

The three things that delay projects most: late content and photos, feedback scattered over many rounds, and changing the structure after development starts. Avoid them and your project will most likely finish on time or early.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to design a website from start to finish?

A small website takes about two weeks, a mid-sized company website three to five weeks, and a store or platform four to eight weeks or more. The timeline depends a lot on how quickly content is prepared and reviews are answered.

What is the most important stage of website design?

Discovery and structure. Mistakes there cost more than at any later stage, because changing the website's structure after development means redoing a large part of the work.

What should I prepare before starting?

A clear description of your business and services, who your customers are, the goal of the website, your logo and brand identity if you have them, real photos of your work and team, and examples of websites you like and why.

Can the design be changed after development?

It's possible, but slower and more expensive. That's why we show the complete design on mobile and desktop and get it approved before development starts.
