12 Website Design Mistakes That Cost Businesses Customers Every Day

The costliest website design mistakes are: a slow website on mobile, not saying what you do on the first screen, no visible call and WhatsApp button, all services on one page, copy about the company instead of benefits for the customer, no price or price range, stock photos instead of real ones, long forms, heavy sliders, no trust signals, no SEO setup, and not measuring results.
We review business websites almost every week, either because the owner wants to renew it, or because they pay for ads and get no results. Over time we noticed that the same mistakes repeat, regardless of the company’s size or industry.
The good news: most are easy to fix. The bad news: every day they stay, you lose customers you don’t even know visited you.
1. A slow website on mobile
The visitor opens your website on their phone over mobile data, and the page takes six or seven seconds. Many leave before they see your logo.
Fix: compress images, reduce plugins, use a lightweight theme, caching and suitable hosting. Details in the website speed guide.
2. The first screen doesn’t say what you do
“Towards a better digital future” or “Quality is our motto” over a beautiful image. The visitor doesn’t know: is this a contracting company? A consultancy? A trading firm?
Fix: a headline that answers three questions: what do you offer? For whom? Where? Example: “AC repair for homes and businesses in Amman, same day”.
3. No clear contact button
The phone number is at the bottom of the last page, and the “Contact us” button leads to a long form.
Fix: call and WhatsApp buttons always visible on mobile, and a clear call to action at the end of every important section.
4. All services on one page
A “Services” page with ten services, two lines each. Google doesn’t know which service to show to whom, and the visitor finds no details to convince them.
Fix: a separate page for every main service, with enough content, FAQs and a call to action. This is also one of the strongest things you can do for SEO.
5. Copy about the company, not the customer
“Our company was founded in… and we believe in… and we strive to…”. Customers aren’t looking for your story first; they are looking for a solution to their problem.
Fix: write about the result the customer gets, then use your story as proof of trust. Our guide: how to write website copy that sells.
6. No hint of the price at all
A visitor who finds no idea of the price assumes it is high, or sends the same question to you and five competitors.
Fix: a “from” price, a price range, or example packages. Not necessarily a full list.
7. Stock photos from free image sites
The same smiling man in a suit the customer has seen on twenty other websites. The result: an impression that you aren’t real.
Fix: real photos of your team, work and place, even taken with a good phone in natural light.
8. Long contact forms
First name, last name, email, phone, company, job title, city, budget, how did you hear about us… Every extra field loses part of the interested visitors.
Fix: name, phone and message. Ask the rest on the call.
9. A heavy slider at the top of the page
Five slides changing every three seconds, slowing the website, while hardly anyone sees past the first one.
Fix: a fixed image or design with one strong message and a clear button.
10. Nothing that builds trust
No past work, no clients, no reviews, no address, no people.
Fix: a real portfolio, client logos with permission, reviews with real names, official accreditations, and an About page with faces.
11. A website not optimized for Google
Every page has the same title, images have no alt text, URLs look like ?page_id=123, there is no sitemap and no Search Console.
Fix: technical SEO basics from day one. We explain them in technical SEO during website design.
12. Nobody measures anything
“How many customers did your website bring last month?” If the answer is “I don’t know”, you can’t improve anything.
Fix: GA4 with tracking for calls, WhatsApp and forms. Read how to measure your website’s success.
The two-minute test for your website
Open your website on your phone now, and answer honestly:
- Did it open in about three seconds?
- Did you understand what the company offers from the first screen?
- Can you see a call or WhatsApp button without searching?
- Is there a separate page for your most important service?
- Are there real photos and past work?
- Do you know roughly how much you would pay?
If you answered “no” to two or more, your website is probably losing customers. Send us its link and we’ll tell you honestly what it needs, whether small improvements or a new design.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most damaging mistake for business websites?
In our experience: slowness on mobile and an unclear message on the first screen. If the visitor doesn't understand within seconds what you offer and for whom, or has to wait too long, they leave before seeing anything else.
Can these mistakes be fixed without redesigning the website?
Many of them, yes: adding contact buttons, improving copy, compressing images, splitting services into pages, and adding tracking. But slowness caused by a heavy theme or poor structure may need a rebuild.
How do I know if my website has these mistakes?
Open it on your phone as if you were a customer, and go through the list in this article. Use PageSpeed Insights for speed, and Google Analytics to see where visitors leave.
